After months of practice, students from Sri Kuala Lumpur's primary school came together over the weekend to present their version of the fairytale Thumbelina.

According to Sri Kuala Lumpur Primary School principal Dr Tan Khun, it wasn't an easy task for the children to learn the musical fairytale created by Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen.

Tan said the students went through several auditions early this year before the final cast of 21 members were chosen. "It wasn't easy to choose the cast members as the students are all fairly talented. The challenge also did not end there for the teachers as they were also put in charge to persuade parents to allow their children to return for practice for the play weekly after school hours," said Tan.

However, he and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairman Agnes Cosset was glad that both parents and students had worked well together through the months in making the play a success.

"The parents made sure their children did not miss out in any practice sessions but also provided help in being make-up artists for the cast members, " said Cosset.

Proceeds from sales of tickets of the two-day musical production were channelled to 10 charity organisations selected by the school.

"Every two to three years, the school would initiate a bigger scale charity project, and this year is one of them where we try to give back to society," said Sri Kuala Lumpur School CEO Hanif Othman Merican.

Hanif added that the production was the first of three charity events under the MAgic of Sharing theme to raise RM30,000 for the homes.

Shocking find: Thumbelina's mother (Melissa Soo Wei Lum) was shocked to discover the little girl hiding in one of the flowers. Looking on is her 'husband' played by Bryan Ong

The other two events are a golf tournament with raffle draws at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club on July 20 and a food fiesta at the school grounds on July 12.

Also present was Selangor senior executive councillor Teresa Kok
